Booking a Modo

How do I book a Modo vehicle?

Booking a Modo vehicle is easy. You can book using our app (available for IOS and Android), logging into your account, or by phone.

Log in with your member number or username.
You can search available vehicles by location, neighbourhood, or vehicle type.
Before you book, take a moment to plan the start and end times of your trip. Reserve the vehicle for the whole time you’ll have it, even overnight hours, so we know when the vehicle will be returned to its home location and becomes available for someone else to book.

If you have the vehicle between 6 p.m. and 9 a.m., you're only billed for a maximum of 3 hours. This is called our overnight charge.
For quick and easy booking, you can set favourite locations near your home or your work (available on desktop only).

To initiate your booking, choose between Set Return or Open Return. Enter your preferred starting date, time, and desired end date and time. The map will automatically update and showcase the available vehicles that match your request. Locations displayed in grey are currently unavailable, whereas those in red are open for reservations. If you come across a location that is both grey and red, it implies that at least one car from this location is currently open for booking.

Select your desired location with availability and choose the vehicle you wish to book. Once you have made your selection, click on the “Book Vehicle” button and carefully review the vehicle information and booking details. After reviewing, click on the “Confirm Booking” button. You’re all set!

Do I need to book a Modo vehicle in advance?

If the vehicle you want is available, you can book on the spot or up to a year in advance. If you’re interested in a specific vehicle, advanced planning is always a good idea. For example, if you know you’ll need a cargo van next week to help your pal move, book it as soon as possible — especially for the first weekend of the month.

How long can I book a vehicle for?

The minimum booking time is 30 minutes. Bookings can be extended in 15-minute increments, subject to availability. Members can book online for a maximum duration of 10 days. If you would like to make a booking for longer than 10 days, contact us and we can help get you set up.

How do I end my booking?

Once you're finished your trip, end your booking through the app.

At the end of every booking, please make sure to follow these steps:

Return the vehicle on time. You can check the exact time on your mobile phone.
Return the vehicle to its home location. If unavailable, park the vehicle in an unrestricted spot as close to the home location as possible and call us immediately‍
Tidy up the interior and exterior of the vehicle and remove all your personal belongings.
Make sure the gas tank is at least ¼ full. If you're using an electric vehicle, make sure the range is not less than 30 km and plug in the EV in its charger.
Check for any damages inside and outside and report them through the app or by emailing info@modo.coop.
Ensure that the key and fuel card are in their respective pouches.
Lock all doors, including the back hatch.
Fob out to properly secure the vehicle. Do not use the vehicle's power locks or key.

You have an open return? Follow these steps.

How do I cancel a booking?

You can cancel a booking using the same method that you used to book the vehicle.

There’s no charge for cancelling your booking with more than 12 hours notice.
If you cancel with less than 12 hours’ notice, you will be charged 50% of the original booking cost.
If you don’t show up, you’ll be charged 100% of the original booking cost. This charge is in place to keep the carsharing system fair and functional ensuring vehicles are available for other members to book.
If you finish a trip early and have more than 15 minutes remaining, you can end your booking early via the mobile app, by logging in online or by giving us a call. We reimburse 50% of the remaining booking cost. If another member books the vehicle during the time you’ve freed up, your cancellation charge drops to zero.

Can I take a Modo vehicle into the U.S.?

Yes. Our fleet insurance covers you to drive anywhere in Canada and the United States.

Here’s a useful tip: give yourself a bit of extra time before your trip to inspect your booked vehicle — inside and out. Remove any items that don’t belong to you or the Modo vehicle. That way, if you’re asked at the border, you can say with confidence that you know all the contents of the vehicle.

What types of vehicles does Modo have?

No other carsharing service gives you access to a more diverse fleet of vehicles than Modo. The Modo fleet includes:

Hatchbacks
Convertibles
SUVs
Pick-up trucks
Hybrids
Sedans
Minivans
Electric vehicles
Cargo vans*

*Note that oversized vehicles cost more to operate, so we’ve priced them a bit higher than the rest of our fleet. Our oversized vehicles currently include our Ram ProMaster cargo vans and this vehicle type is only available for a Set Return trip.

What types of vehicle accessories are available?

Our available accessories vary from vehicle to vehicle. They include Bluetooth, roof racks, backup cameras, Stow-N-Go seating, child seats and winter tires.

Do Modo vehicles come equipped with winter tires?

All Modo vehicles, except for the Mazda Mx-5, are winter ready and equipped with all-season Mud and Snow (M+S) tires. Approximately 25% of our fleet is equipped with heavy duty winter-rated tires. You’ll want these for extreme winter conditions and heavy snowfall, especially on ungroomed roads.

When booking a vehicle, you can filter by accessory to view your options.

Can I install a car seat or a roof rack?

Yes. However, apart from baby seats, child seats, roof racks and bicycle racks, you must call and speak to Modo staff before you install any third-party equipment on a Modo vehicle. Trailers, hitches or other tow-enabling devices and tire chains are never allowed on a Modo car. You are liable if the rack or any gear on the rack damages the car, and for any harm caused by the poor or inadequate installation of baby and child seats.

Can I install my own tire chains or tow hitches on Modo vehicles?

No. Tire chains, trailers, hitches or other tow-enabling devices are never allowed on any Modo vehicle.

Can I install my own bike rack on Modo vehicles?

Yes, if you do not have a Modo vehicle with a Modo bike rack available, you are welcome to install your own.

However, you will be responsible for any damage done to the Modo from attaching a bike rack or any damage caused by the rack.

Where are Modo vehicles located?

Modo vehicles can be found in hundreds of home locations around the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Squamish and the Okanagan. Our current service areas include North Vancouver, UBC, Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Surrey, Richmond, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Victoria, Esquimalt, Oak Bay, Saanich, Sidney, Nanaimo and Kelowna. We also have vehicles at the major ferry terminals.

How do I book a Modo with a child seat?

To find the closest Modo equipped with a child seat, start a new booking, and select “Child Seat” in the “Required Features” menu.
