By becoming a member, you can use car sharing services. We have two membership types:
- Casual members: Do not hold shares in the co-op and are not entitled to a vote. Must possess a credit card for payment. One driver allowed. Can upgrade to Simple or Value plan by purchasing $400 refundable share equity. Note: $100 annual fee can be applied to share equity in the first year.
- Simple and Value members: One time $400 purchase of fully refundable share equity. Hold voting rights and allowed two drivers in the same household.
Simple and Value plan members may change their rate plan up to three times per calendar year by emailing us at manager@victoriacarshare.ca. Is Car Sharing Affordable?
Car Sharing is usually less expensive than car rental for trips under 200 km. Car Sharing is usually cheaper than car ownership for people who need a car (or a second car) less than five days per week. Most of our members walk, bike, carpool, bus, or use a scooter for everyday commuting. Car sharing is perfect for these trips:
- Shopping and groceries
- Leisure, sports, and dates
- Ferry and airport pick-ups/drop-offs or transporting people
- Business, on-call and entrepreneurship
- Camping or poor weather transportation
- Medical or moving kids
- House renovations or transporting supplies
Driving is, by nature, expensive. According to BCAA, the annual cost of car ownership is $5,000 to $12,000 per year. The average car share member spends $1,000 to $3,000 per year. You can use the Modo car ownership calculator to estimate what your car costs you annually and monthly. If your car costs $500 per month and you take five trips per month, each trip costs you $100. Compare that to VCSC membership, launch our trip calulator in new window to see what your trips will cost.
Our rates may increase up to 5% per year. A fuel surcharge may be added to if a month's fuel expenditures are >30% of kilometer revenue. We have not had a fuel surcharge since October 2008.
