Our Affordable Housing / Community Wheels Program is the result of an innovative partnership between the Victoria Car Share Co-op and the Greater Victoria Housing Society. This project is made possible by community project funding from Vancity. Please see our background sheet for more information on the scope, purpose and benefits of the program.
What is car sharing?
Car sharing is an alternative to private car ownership. Car sharing works like a rental, except that you can "rent" a car for as little as 30 minutes. You pay by the hour and kilometre, and often you will have a vehicle that lives in your neighbourhood. Car sharing is more economical than car ownership if you only need a car a few times per week or month.
What is the Affordable Housing / Community Wheels Program
The Affordable Housing / Community Wheels Program offers mobility options to those living in Greater Victoria Housing Society buildings. This project will allocate 15 free Victoria Car Share memberships to eligible tenants and will serve as a model for future partnerships between car sharing and affordable housing. The value of a Victoria Car Share Co-op membership is $400.
Do I qualify?
In order to take advantage of a free Victoria Car Share membership, you must satisfy these requirements:
How do I enrol in the Affordable Housing / Community Wheels Program?
Email the GVHS at email@example.com with your full name and address, and tell them you want to join the program. If you are successful and there is availability, joining instructions will be emailed to you. These instructions indicate how to submit your ICBC driving abstract and schedule an orientation. After you are approved, you may access the joining instructions, disregarding payment for shares.
As part of the program, we will be surveying participants before and after they enrol in the program. This information will be held confidentially and used to report on program success.
