As a grassroots environmental NGO, using the Car Share Co-op was a natural fit for us environmentally – but don’t be fooled, it was also a shrewd business decision!
The Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre runs a demonstration site which oftentimes requires supplies to be picked up from local farms and hardware stores and because we also aim to recycle whatever can’t be composted, we use the truck to take loads to various recycling depots. We also deliver over 130 compost education programs to classrooms and attend over two dozen community outreach events each year. Each of these requires us to take a variety of display materials, compost supplies & bins, educational literature, and even volunteers. We also use the Car Share Co-op for our largest event of the year--Pumpkin Smash--where we need multiple vehicles simultaneously for an entire weekend to transport pylons, large signs and banners, display materials, volunteers, and “smashing” games. Finally, we even use the Car Share for our staff retreat day in the summer where our small and dedicated staff flees the city for a well deserved break by the beach! We love promoting the environmental alternative of car sharing while we do our community work. As a charity, we also save valuable funds by not having to pay for the upkeep of a permanent vehicle. The variety of vehicles suits the multitude of activities we do and we appreciate having access to several vehicles simultaneously for the occasional large event. The Victoria Car Share Co-op is a wonderful opportunity for any small business to make a smart green choice---green for the environment and green for the money saved!
